GenX Designer: Rebekah Williams

1.       Name:  Rebekah Williams

2.       Age:  15

3.       Why fashion design?
I’ve always been artistic and I knew that I didn’t want to be just another doctor or lawyer. I wanted to do something completely different and something that I knew I would enjoy doing in life and fashion design was it.

4.       What’s the inspiration behind your collection?
The inspiration behind my collection was a renaissance of ball dresses. I've realized that a lot of girls go for the long and flowing dresses for their high school balls, but I think that shorter dresses would be more fun and there could be more variety allowing people to really express themselves through their style. The pieces that were in my collection were simple, yet allowed for one to make the style their own.

5.       How was it for doing your first collection?
Honestly, being that I’ve just started to sew and I had to design and create all the pieces by myself, it was extremely difficult. I spent hours and hours just trying to make them all as perfect as possible. I was an arduous but good experience. Thankfully I had my sister and mom to help me along the way. I also got some advice from a fashion designer.

6.       How was it presenting your first collection?
It was very exciting. I was proud of myself for being able to accomplish such a demanding task under the circumstances in which I did. I feel like it was the first step in eventually becoming a successful designer somewhere in the near future.

7.       Number of pieces?
For the show I did three pieces.

8.       How was your GenX experience?
The GenX fashion show for me was an inspiration as to where I would like to be as a seamstress. Right now I need improvement in sewing and there’s only so much I can do, but seeing what the other designers put on display that night, it made me want to strive to reach to their level and eventually, go beyond that.

9.       Do you see yourself doing a follow up collection in the future?
I most likely won’t be doing another collection in St.Vincent or the GenX show. The reason being that, I want to focus on doing well in the CXC examinations next year.  Also, I most likely will be going of to university right after. But I most definitely will be doing collections in the future.

10.   What’s your thoughts on the local fashion/style scene in St. Vincent?
Well, I’m really impressed by what some designers have done. But, as for what the local people wear in St.Vincent and the variety of good clothes to choose from in stores… I really am disappointed. Being from New York, I’m used to seeing people wear high fashion and having so many stores with good clothes to choose from and since I’ve been here, I feel like I've been deprived of shopping on a whole. I’ve only bought one thing from here in the year I’ve been here.

Thank You!
Fashion and Style. Style and Fashion. The Business of Fashion is about Style. The Business of Style is about Fashion. But none can argue, there both about BUSINESS. As great as we are in Style and/or Fashion we need to have that same flare, and urgency about the Business.
