GenX Coverage: Special Thanks To Our Contributing Writer & F.I.T Student: Samantha.
Saturday July 31st 2010 GenX added many new faces to its lineup which showcased impressive collections from twelve young designers in a fast-paced, upbeat show.
The opener Soka’s RTW was an accomplished collection which set the standard for what was to come. The designer and creator of GenX Karen DeFreitas Fraser managed to combine a sense of practicality with urban glamour. Both fiercely feminine and masculine, the collection was peppered with sporty pieces like mini striped skirts, tribal print corset tops and t-shirts branded with the Soka logo.
The mood switched as Godwin Charles fabulously bright and brash sportswear for men and women titled ‘Growing Up’ stormed into view. Made from recycled or shall we say up-cycled materials his collection was heavy on graphic prints and a bold mix of tie-dyed hues. These were combined with playful puff sleeves, sweetheart necklines and flirty asymmetrical hems.
Flavorz designer Crystal Daniel worked a formula of glossy
satin for cocktail dresses with a well-measured dose of embellished lace for
her bridal line.
Shernicia Mayers showed great versatility by blending swimwear with day wear which added freshness to her collection, however she didn't abandon the classics: A sleeveless blouse with a pleated front detail and shorts was numbered among the best looks.
Soka produced a bold, uncompromising but cohesive swimsuit collection in black, red and sky blue accessorized with feathered shoulder wings reminiscent of the very recent Vincy carnival mardi gras.
I Jazz Fashions striking swimsuit pieces added yet another flavour – her work combined crochet techniques with a modern edge.
Naudica ‘Pinky’ Williams presented a profusion of candied hues which were criss-crossed to create daring moni-kinis and bikinis. These undoubtedly have a future by the pool.
Jeremy Payne’s ‘Silky Ruff’ latest collection consisted of ten looks which focused attention on opposing forces: smooth vs. rough, colors vs. neutrals. Rows of ruffles and full skirts on dresses were twirl-worthy. The designer also slightly referenced lingerie trends with white cotton tops. There were plenty of practical day wear and of course for that night-out too.
The audience was also introduced to the Next Gen designers. Crystal Oliver’s Chateau cotton totes and clutches in a variety of shape and sizes were chic and dotted with embellishment. Rachel Karen Bailey’s playful use of bold color to her mix of frilly swimwear added depth and texture to her sophisticated pieces. Rhonelle Simmons’ dresses and separates cleverly combined something cute and ladylike. Rebekah Williams’ designs were a mix of classic minimalism in standout palettes of purple and blue.
All GenX 2010 designers were under the age of twenty-five.
